Bright Ideas: Spring Cleaning Tips For Your Home

Bright Ideas: Spring Cleaning Tips For Your Home

?When was the last time you cleaned the lighting fixtures in your home?

It is okay if you can't remember. You aren't alone.

Most people never think about their home's lighting until it is time to change a burnt-out bulb. But a dirty lighting fixture can decrease the brightness in your home by as much as 20 percent. Why strain your eyes when it only takes a few minutes to return your home to optimal brightness?

Spring Cleaning Tips for Your Lighting Fixtures

You can easily clean all of your home's lighting fixtures:

  • A light bulb attracts dust like a magnet. It only takes a moment to unscrew a light bulb and dust it with a soft, clean and dry cloth. Make sure the bulb is entirely dry before screwing it back into place.
  • The bottom of glass globes can collect dirt and even dead bugs. Unscrew a globe from its base and empty any debris from the inside. You can place smaller globes one at a time into a plastic tub filled with warm water and with a little mild detergent. Let the globe soak for a few minutes. Rinse and let it thoroughly air dry before replacing. To clean a larger globe, empty it and then gently wash the interior and exterior with a damp, soft cloth. Air dry and then replace.

Clean the canopy and base of your lighting fixtures with a soft, clean cloth and a metal cleaning solution. Turn off the power before cleaning. You should always spray the cloth and avoid spraying directly onto the lighting fixture.

  • Clean the canopy and base of your lighting fixtures with a soft, clean cloth and a metal cleaning solution. Turn off the power before cleaning. You should always spray the cloth and avoid spraying directly onto the lighting fixture.
  • Lamp shades require frequent dustings, inside and out. Use a good quality duster to keep the dust from floating around your living room.
  • The blades of a ceiling fan with lights need frequent cleaning with a soft, clean, damp cloth to prevent the fan from spreading dust around your room.
  • Chandeliers are often expensive, delicate and have multiple parts, which make them difficult to clean. You can use a duster to get rid of any dust, but getting a chandelier really clean is difficult. A simple solution is to remove large strands from the chandelier and wipe them down with a batch of equal parts vinegar and water. Make sure you use a soft cloth for both cleaning and drying and also make sure the strands are completely dry before reattaching them.
