To get proper illumination you need to have the right light bulb for each area of your home. Different lights serve different purposes, so you want to make sure you have the bulb that suits that purpose. There are several different types of light bulbs that can be used to illuminate your home inside and out. Northern Lighting has a wide range of bulbs available from landscaping, ceiling, wall-mounts and more. Learn about each of the bulbs that you need to make your home brighter and more secure.
Incandescent
Incandescent bulbs use a heated filament to light the globe. These bulbs come in a variety of sizes and wattages. Incandescent bulbs can be used for floor lamps, desk lamps, candelabras, outdoor wall fixtures and landscape lighting. These lights can also be used as dimmers, commercial lighting, and handheld flashlights. Incandescent bulbs give off a warm, bright light in your home.
Compact Florescent Bulbs (CFLs)
Unlike incandescent bulbs, which use filaments, CFLs use argon and mercury vapor to produce light. These bulbs require less energy in your home. CFLs use 70 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs. These bulbs emit a warm, but slightly cool color. CFLs also need air. They should be placed in open fixtures, such as uncovered recessed home lighting. If you are going to use them outdoors, order a partially enclosed outdoor wall-mount for them.
Light-Emitting Diode (LEDs)
LEDs are a mixture of incandescent and CFL light bulbs. LEDs are as bright as incandescent bulbs but do not emit the same kind of heat. They are as energy-efficient as CFLs, but they last three times longer. Incandescent and CFLs can produce all-around light while LEDs are a directional light source. Use these bulbs for task lighting. Place in areas that are mainly used for reading, writing, studying and working. Because high ceiling areas are hard to reach, it might be helpful to install these lights in those areas because they have a longer shelf life. LEDs can come in a variety of colors, such as green, blue, amber and red. They are perfect to display during the holidays.
Halogen
A halogen light bulb uses gas to create energy that produces light. These bulbs are small, lightweight and have a longer lifespan than incandescent bulbs. Halogen light bulbs give off a color that is similar to natural sunlight. You have to be careful with them, though, as these bulbs can get extremely hot. They are best when placed in ceilings, landscaping areas and in motion security sensors. Northern Lighting has a variety of halogen lighting options for your home lighting needs.
