Which Type of Light Bulb Do You Need?
Experience old-world rustic comfort with a pair of gas torches in the garden, dazzle dinner guests with a gorgeous chandelier, or maintain subtle elegance with a classic ceiling mount fixture. With finish options including black, brass, bronze, chrome, nickel, copper and gold, there are a world of indoor and outdoor possibilities for lighting in your home.
With such a selection, even once you find the right fixture, it can be difficult to choose the right light bulbs to suit your needs. Consider the following:
-
?
Incandescent bulbs are most common, providing a familiar, warm light.
-
Halogen bulbs are similar to basic incandescent light bulbs, but provide a brighter, whiter look that is meant to accurately approximate daylight.
-
Fluorescent bulbs come in multiple forms and colors of light, although most people think of the cool blue ceiling lighting of an office. This type of bulb is great when you want to easily light a large area.
-
Compact fluorescent bulbsare also strong enough to light general areas, but are much quieter and warmer than the office fluorescent light bulb.
-
LEDs provide directional light that's good for use in small areas for specific tasks. These are commonly used for under-counter lighting but can also be used for larger areas like entire rooms as well.
Keep in mind that different light bulbs have different life spans, prices and energy efficiency levels. For example, CF bulbs use a fraction of the energy of incandescent bulbs and last around 10 times longer. Halogen light bulbs are also more energy-efficient than incandescent bulbs but are typically more expensive. Ultimately, the best way to choose a bulb is to really consider the type of area being lit, the size of the area to be illuminated, and the sorts of activities for which the light may be needed. Is it a decorative element where you want diffuse lighting, or a utilitarian element where you may prefer focused lighting for performing specific tasks?
