Creative Ways To Decorate With Christmas Lights Year-Round

Creative Ways To Decorate With Christmas Lights Year-Round

Once the holidays are over, few of us relish the thought of "un-decorating" our homes. Somehow taking down the tree, packing away the ornaments and untangling strings of lights does not have the same appeal as bringing out those same decorations did just a few weeks ago. When it comes to Christmas lights, many people are sad to see them go back into a box and wish that there was a way to incorporate those lights into their overall decor. Fortunately, there are multiple ways to use Christmas lights year-round. The following suggestions will make your home feel warm and inviting throughout the year and with the added benefit of not having to bundle up those strings of lights and store them with the rest of the Christmas clutter!

Create Unique Outdoor Light Fixtures

A string of small lights can really transform ordinary objects. An excellent way to liven up an outdoor space is to find a grapevine globe and wrap it with lights. Garden centers and many arts and craft stores offer a broad range of products created from grapevines. Even a basket can be made into an unusual and memorable light fixture, as long as there are sufficient spaces in the weave to allow light to shine through. The end result will be a lightweight yet sturdy light fixture that can be hung from a porch or patio to provide soft lighting.

Create a Lightscape

Christmas lights can be repurposed to create a beautiful lightscape. Begin with a stretched canvas panel from an arts and crafts store. Decide the shape of the design, marking the position of each individual light in pencil on the back of the canvas. Use an awl to create a perfectly round hole that is slightly smaller than the bulbs on your string of lights. Then, carefully insert a light bulb through each hole, securing in place with glue on the back of the canvas.

Use strings of lights to illuminate an unused space within your home. A small closet, storage space under the eaves or cubby under the stairs can easily be transformed into a child's personal reading nook, play area or fort.

Incorporate Lights into Natural Displays

A great way to repurpose Christmas lights is by wrapping them around decorative branches that are anchored into a sturdy base. The lights will highlight the beauty of the branches, and also provides a functional light source in an entryway or hallway.

Create a Child-Like Hideaway

Use strings of lights to illuminate an unused space within your home. A small closet, storage space under the eaves or cubby under the stairs can easily be transformed into a child's personal reading nook, play area or fort. Christmas lights do not generate significant heat, nor are the bulbs particularly fragile, making them ideal for home lighting use in small spaces.
